1st Annual Shafferland Birthday Trip: Creation Museum

Our birthdays are three weeks apart, and before we got married, I told Ryan that I am not one of those people that is fine celebrating a birthday "whenever." Birthdays are personal holidays and should be observed ON the actual day. So ON his birthday, we had a party for 2 and ON my birthday {I'm told} we'll have a party for 2. But I thought it would be fun to do something bigger and better between the birthdays...so we decided to start a tradition of taking a weekender every year.

This year....

Ryan had always wanted to visit the Creation Museum {which is actually in Petersburg, Kentucky, but it's really close to Cincinnati} so we decided that would be our first destination!

Before we set out on the road, Ryan said he wanted to give me my birthday present early!
 And it was a new camera! Like a real, grownup camera! I was in awe...
He wanted me to have it to play with in the car and to enjoy while we were gone, so he gave it to me early! We headed out on the open road:

We had a great time driving down to the Museum...road tripping with this guy is much fun. We arrived there about 11:00 in the morning and dove in with our tour!

When we first got inside, they took us aside and had us stand in front of a green screen for a photo opp. Do notice the color of my shirt.
We call that a WOOPSIE!!!!

We had some fun with the pics:
I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the Museum, but I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not really one for "museum-y" kinds of things. But this one was fun! One thing I loved most was that pictures were not prohibited throughout most of the museum. Here are some of my faves:

They asked a lot of questions throughout - on screens and signs - things designe to make you think. {Ryan and I both wish they also would have provided a lot more answers. Sometimes we really didn't know the answers!!}
 I really appreciated the way they laid out what the Bible says vs what the world often teaches. Helps you better know truth when you can see it laid out next to what you always hear!
 I loved their use of lifelike figures throughout the museum. Though they stuck pretty closely to just focusing on Creation, they did acknowledge other chapters of the Bible...and here are some of the Old Testament people. Not Ryan. He's just posing with them. :)
 Hanging out with Paul.
 They told the story of the six days of creation through a video presentation and then we got to move through the story of Adam and Eve. Here they are in the Garden.
 Eating the forbidden fruit...
 Which we thought looked a lot like the JuJu Berries at the frozen yogurt store in town.
 Methuselah. {He actually moved and talked.}
 Loved their rendering of the ark. It included people and animals trying to scramble to safety in the rising waters.
We spent all morning and a good chunk of the early afternoon just walking through the exhibits. I'll wrap it up there today!

Love the Creation museum. We went when it first opened. I just told my parents I'd like to go again.

Dayton has an awesome Air Force museum.

As you may already have guessed, Dave and I give each other experiences for our birthdays instead of gifts. I love the idea of celebrating together. I am curious about the Creation Museum but I don't know if we'll ever make it there.

Also whooo hooo!!!! for a new camera. We got a grown-up camera for each other for Christmas/Channukah and I have ABSOLUTELY loved it. The pictures are just so much better. I am looking forward to hearing what you think of yours.

Mark - It's worth it!!

Lois - REALLY!!?!?!!?!? :) (Although please do let the record show that I was the one who knew Faith Hill was out and Carrie Underwood was in as the open to Sunday Night Football. I tried to get him to believe I found that in my "football research" but he didn't buy it. He's a wise man.)

Odie - Did you know they're building a new separate campus that will have a replica of the ark?

Natasha - I love the experiences you guys do for each other! That's great!!! So far I'm loving the camera, though I have much to learn about all it can do!!

Marcia - THANK YOU for being with me on the birthday bit. It's really the only way to go!! The museum has gorgeous gardens too...that post forthcoming. :)

I will have to see that ark replica. Also my friends from church say the living nativity at Christmas is awesome.

In your opinion, would the Creation Museum be interesting for an 8 and 9 year old or is it geared more for adults? We were thinking about taking our kids this summer. :) Thanks!!!

Odie - that would be so neat to see!

Tia - That is a great age, we think (I asked Ryan too) to take them. They have a lot of interactive things and there were quite a few kids there when we were - school groups and families. There are some parts that might be more interesting to adults just because of the amount of reading involved, but there are tons of areas designed for kids. We say go!! :)
