Sunday Sentiments: Calm

Back at the beginning of April, we had some water damage in our living room, so we ended up pulling out all the furniture, ripping out the carpet (to dry and save it) and since then, we’ve been walking on ripped carpet padding covered with beach towels. (There might be some specific reasons why this is not first and foremost a home décor blog.)

Originally we thought we would just leave it all ripped up until we could put it back together, but after a week of pretending our bed was a couch, we gave up on that plan, put everything back on the aforementioned padding and towels and resumed living in a somewhat awkward-flooring environment,

This week the guys came to put the carpet back, Ryan shampooed it, and then we spent about two hours putting everything back the way it had been.

I wanted to sit right down and cry after that.

It’s a silly thing, really. It’s just living room carpet. It’s completely a first-world problem. But I can’t explain the exhale that came with the return of normalcy in that room.

We crave calm. Not just the “we” of Ryan and Bekah, but all of us. We need a place to go that is comforting and calm. We need a place of respite. And when that safe space is out of sorts, we are out of sorts.

On this day of rest, I hope your heart has a calm place to rest, rejuvenate, and refresh.

            Much love to you, friends.

Saturday Suggestions: Inspirations for Your Weekend

Good morning, and happy Saturday! June ends tomorrow, and it has been a full and (mostly) wonderful month here for us. My planner is full of snippets of our adventures, my journal is about 50 pages long, chronicling those moments, and my heart is thankful for so many good things that have taken place. So while I wrap up this month and gear up for July, here are some fun finds for you.

ONE.

I told you about the summer baking bingo challenge I’m doing. This week I crossed off making a berry pie. I thought I would share the recipe links with you, because it turned out pretty tasty. I was going for healthier versions without a bunch of added oils and sugars. I used this crust recipe, which is an oatmeal crust and is a bit reminiscent of a graham cracker crust in taste. It’s not a crust you roll out (though you do bake it), but I will say this: it’s fast. I used the coconut oil version of it and it was tasty. Then I used the strawberry filling from this recipe, which uses some plant-based sweetener, but it largely relies on the strawberries for the sweetness. And then I made this coconut milk whipped cream which was SUPER fast to put together.

TWO.

This converted church house showed up on For the Love of Old Houses this week. Church homes are hit-or-miss for me on layout. Sometimes they just feel so awkward. This one, though, I liked! And I love the interior beams and the exterior color. OH! And the stained glass windows. What’s your favorite part? Did I miss something I should put on my favorites list?

THREE.

The Fourth of July is next week and I found some ideas here for celebrating it to the fullest! (Funny story: on our way home from vacation, we passed a sign in a tiny town announcing that the Fourth of July would be held on July 5th there. I get it – but it was funny to read!) When Ryan and I were first married, we always drove to a fantastic fireworks display over Morse Lake in Cicero, Indiana. We did that for several years and it remains my favorite way to see fireworks! While Lexi holds her own fairly well, she is not a fireworks dog, so we stay home now and watch them on TV. But we can still have some fun traditions to enjoy on the holiday!

FOUR.

Speaking of July, if you’re doing some forward planning for the month, here are some fun ideas to put on your list. I made note of some of the holidays (you know – the food holidays that aren’t real) so I could line them up with my baking bingo card and celebrate while I color in my squares!

FIVE.

One of my friends is on a pretty epic vacation that is taking her through several national parks and on some scenic roads. I’m drinking in every single post she shares, because the views are stunning. So when I happened upon this post of the best (according to the writer) hikes in the US, I had to take a look. Not surprisingly, I haven’t done any of them. There are a few on here that are way beyond me. But some of them…WOW! Aren’t the pictures amazing?

SIX.

If you like to learn – especially quirky things – here is a free course you can take to learn how photographs can teach you things about the family in the picture. I am going to sign right up and take it myself!!

BONUS:

Here are this week’s capsule photos – though you’ll notice Sunday steps out of the norm. We were on vacation and spent the entire day in the great outdoors. By the time we returned to the hotel, I was hot, exhausted, and not the least bit interested in putting on real clothes for a photograph. Vacation grace for the win!

Flashback Friday: Writing Your Story One Week at a Time

We are halfway through the year, and we have spent every Friday for these past six months writing our story, one week at a time. My list of prompts is dwindling, so I think I’ll start using Fridays for another purpose starting in July.

Since this is the last day for a Flashback Friday, I’ll ask this question to guide you today:

What legacy do you hope to leave with the life you live?

We could probably spend six months on that question alone, couldn’t we?

I don’t know that I could answer in just one word, but I do know I hope my legacy is one of intentionality and one that has pointed those around me to Christ. Goodness, I’ve not done this perfectly. My flaws are many, and that isn’t lost on me.

Even so, I hope I live in such a way that my intentionality to love and care for those around me is seen even when my imperfections get in the way. I hope that every person who steps foot in our home feels at home. I hope that every person who reads any words I write sees my heart and finds something that either encourages or challenges. I hope that those who ask me to pray for them know that I do and they find the ways God is at work in their lives.

I hope to live with conviction and passion that leaves those around me certain that I love the Lord. I hope that the way I share about God with others propels them to want to know Him too.

I hope to leave a legacy of fiercely loving my husband and everything about marriage. I hope he always knows how deeply I love him and that those who stand in witness to the life we live together have great hope that marriage can be fun and encouraging.

My desires for my legacy have little to do with career or accomplishments or success. Any of those things would be nice, but they aren’t the things that drive me. And when all is said and done, they’re not the things I hope others would remember the most.

That’s what I hope for my legacy.

What do you hope for yours?

Updates on Dreams and Goals: June 2024

How in the world is this month nearly over?? It flew for me. Did it for you?? I thought I would update you on my progress on this month’s dreams and goals – and some other things that happened beyond the plan!

ONE. Finish writing messages for my summer speaking. I wrote six messages this month – and I think I wrote five of them in one week. I was so relieved to have them all written out. I will still have much editing and tweaking to do along the way, but the series is written, and I am so grateful. I cried when I finished it. I did not expect that finish line to be so beautifully overwhelming!

TWO. Finish planning our vacation. It is done – both the planning and the vacationing. I painstakingly planned it all and pretty much nothing went according to plan. But we had fun anyway, and that was what mattered the most! I have so many stories for you, so stay tuned!

THREE. Edit wedding photos. I photographed a wedding on June 1 and worked hard to have all those photos edited and sent off before they got home from their honeymoon. Mission accomplished!

FOUR. Set up fall photos. I contacted our photographer and got on her list! The actual date won’t be set until later, but she has us on her radar.

FIVE. Sort through remaining boxes and totes. This was a massive undertaking, but it is done. We have the totes moved out of the house, and everything is labeled and in its place. I am so relieved. It was one of those never-ending jobs that seemed to multiply rather than resolve. I am pretty sure I cried a few times over the sheer enormity of it all and the finish line that never seemed to get closer.

Additionally…

…we tried making homemade ice cream and it totally failed. I haven’t tried again yet, but we’ll search for a new recipe and see if it might work. (One of my friends sent me some links to some that might work better.)

…we put our hummingbird feeders out and have enjoyed watching the birds come for dinner!

…I started that Bible study on Jacob and have loved what I’ve learned.

…we had work started on our patio, which wasn’t in the plans for the summer, but became necessary to correct a drainage issue. I feel like we are over halfway done, and while it still feels like there is a long way to go, I am so grateful we are this far.

…I started that Bingo Baking challenge, which I told you about earlier. I still have only made three things, but I’ll keep working on it! I honestly have enjoyed the idea of looking for things to make for each category. The thrill of the chase, right?

…the garden has flourished this year. It’s not to harvest level yet, but it’s growing like crazy! It is so exciting to see blossoms and tiny baby veggies starting to grow!

…our living room flooring is now fully and officially reassembled. It has been torn up since the beginning of April, after the problematic drainage caused some water damage inside. We’ve been walking on beach towels for months. We are glad to have our flooring back! (We were able to save the flooring, but it had to be reinstalled.) By the end of this week, the room itself should be put back together.

So there has been our full month of goals, dreams, and a few bonuses thrown in! How has your  month gone?

Fun Finds for June 2024

Good morning, friends! Happy Wednesday to you! I am here today with a handful of fun finds I’ve happened upon this month. Perhaps you’ve heard of some of them. Perhaps others will be new. Either way…enjoy!

1.       The Billie Razor. Here’s a fun weird fact about me. I won’t think twice about investing in a scrapbook, but I hate buying razors. I’m the cheapest person in the world when it comes to buying razors and refuse to spend on them. But I finally reached my saturation point with switching out razors every three uses. When I was perusing in Walmart one night, I saw the Billie razor and decided to try it. I’ve seen some of the people I follow on social media talk about how great it is, so I decided to try it. (I know they have a subscription service and I did not sign up for that; I’ll just buy refill blades as I need them.) I love it. Works so much better than the cheapie razors I’d been using! I’m sold!

2.       Air fried turkey bacon. We have a freestanding air fryer appliance, but our lower oven in our double oven also has air frying capabilities. We have found it doesn’t work super well on some things – like tater tots, for instance. It doesn’t get them as crispy as we like. But I have started making bacon in there and it’s amazing. We have an air frying pan that has a grill-like basket for air flow, and it sits on top of a pan that catches drippings. We use turkey bacon, and I just put that on the grill piece and stick it in the air fryer for a few minutes: no grease, no popping, no turning, and it comes out nice and crispy!

3.       Jacob Bible Study. I know I shared about this new Bible study on Jacob in a previous post, but I have actually been going through it this summer and am finding it to be tremendous. It’s not a strenuous study, but it is meaty and weighty in ways that matter in a good Bible study. I highly recommend! (It’ll probably show up in a book recap later, but I just wanted to give you this recommendation for now!)

4.       Styrofoam Trim.  When we bought our lake house, some previous owner had used Styrofoam trim in the basement, and it was destroyed when we took out the flooring. It was the first time I’d ever seen such a thing and I wasn’t all that impressed. But this month I watched a home tour of a tiny apartment in New York, and the person who rented it had put up some Styrofoam trim as crown molding, because it was something she could easily remove when she moved out. Her version was definitely an upgrade from what I had seen. (Here is an example, though you could search other types and see lots of design options.) I was so impressed at the huge difference it made in her space!

5.       Individual Greek Yogurt Cups. Obviously I know you can buy individual yogurt servings, but I did not know until recently you can also buy plain Greek yogurt in individual cup servings. We got some for our vacation and they were the perfect size for a hotel snack. I took my own honey to sweeten it, my own homemade granola, and some berries for on top, and I ended up with a healthy, protein-laden snack. So easy! We still buy regular tubs of yogurt for everyday life at home, but this was so perfect for travel!

6.       Cinnamon as ant repellant. I haven’t tried this one yet, but I just learned about it and plan to see if it works. We have ants in our hummingbird feeders, and I saw on Facebook where someone had sprinkled cinnamon at the base of her hummingbird feeder to keep ants from climbing the holder and getting inside the feeder. I’m going to see if it really works. Have any of you tried it?

So those are my fun finds for June. How about you? Run across anything we should know about?

Bekah's Bookshelf: My 2024 Reads So Far

Good morning, friends! The end of another month is upon us, so I wanted to spend today sharing a couple of book finds with you! These are my most recent reads.

A couple of months ago, at work, we were given the book A Gospel Primer for Christians, by Milton Vincent. It’s a really short book, coming in at just 100 pages – and I am so glad I read it. The book isn’t new; it was published back in 2008 by a minister who wanted to share what he had learned about the Gospel even after becoming a pastor!

Several years ago I did a Bible study by The Daily Grace Co. called Preaching the Gospel to Yourself. It was a very eye-opening study that talked about the importance of not forgetting the basic Gospel message, even after you become a Christian. This book by Milton Vincent follows that same track and reminds believers of the importance of remembering the basics and filling each day’s thoughts with the truths of the Gospel so we don’t get bogged down by the lies of the enemy. This is the kind of book that has short enough chapters and sections that you could easily read a section each day as part of your daily quiet time.

About half the book is a section called “Reasons to Rehearse the Gospel Daily,” and it contains short chapters that remind believers why this practice is necessary. The second and third sections contain a summary of the Gospel message – one in prose and one in poetry, so depending on which kind of writing you like to read, you can quickly read through the big-picture telling of the Gospel. The final section is the author’s testimony of his own struggles in remembering why he needed to do this.

If you don’t love to read, this is the book for you, because it is short and easy to read. The shorter chapters make it completely manageable, and the author writes in a very readable way. It would be a great book to study personally or with a group! I’m so glad I read it, I underlined many sentences, and I’ll be coming back to this one more than once to refresh!

**

I don’t remember, now, where I heard about this book, but I’m so glad I did, and I’m so glad I read it. I fully recognize that it might not be a perfect fit for many/any of you, but I still want to tell you about it.

The book is called Letters to My Students: Volume 1, On Preaching, written by Jason K. Allen. Dr. Allen is the president at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and has a huge heart for training future ministers. His own  ministry training was deeply impacted by Charles Spurgeon’s Lectures to My Students, and has created this book in a similar fashion to encourage others who serve in ministry.

I had this book on my wish list and Ryan bought it for me for my birthday, hoping it would help and encourage me as I prepared to minister at our church this summer. And oh my goodness – what a HUGE help it has been.

The book is not terribly long (about 150 pages) and is written in a most conversational and understandable manner. Though he has his PhD and is a professor, he makes every word reachable, and I appreciate that.

He gives pages and pages of tremendous advice in how to prepare for a life of ministry, how to prepare a message, and how to grow as a minister of the gospel. I have devoured this book carefully over the last month, underlining, learning, and striving to apply what I’m learning to each message I share.

I am so grateful for this book and know I will be returning to it over and over for as long as the Lord opens the doors for me to share with others. I fully recommend it to those studying (formally or informally) to share the Gospel from a platform.

I have a whole stack of books to read, so I’ll be back next month with some new updates!

Day in the Life: A Saturday in June

I’m excited to share today’s Day in the Life recap with you, because it reflects a Saturday when we actually got to stay home. How WONDERFUL is that?? We were so excited.

A Saturday in June
Ryan is 45, Bekah is 46, Braeya is 18, Lexi is 2.
Weather: Mostly Sunny with a High of 82.

MORNING:

It has been a long time since we did this, but last night we all fell asleep on the couch watching TV, woke up about 2, and went to bed. It has also been a long time since we slept in past 5 or 6 on a Saturday. No alarms today. Bliss.

Ryan gets up about 7:30 and prepares the coffee and Lexi’s Kongs for the day. Those are typically end-of-night chores, but since we fell asleep on the couch and switched locations in the middle of the night, they never got done. Braeya and I sleep in until almost 8. The sun is high in the sky already when we wake up!

Saturday is always sheet-washing day, and today I’m washing the quilt, too. So as soon as I get up, I take all the bedding off the bed and put it in the washer.

Ryan gets Lexi up for her breakfast and morning scavenging. (She always runs around to see if she can find leftover cat food Braeya may have knocked out of her bowl.)

One of Ryan’s favorite things to do when we have a Saturday at home is make breakfast. You can imagine it hasn’t happened lately. But today is his day! So while Lexi hangs out in her bed by my desk and I do some computer and day planner work, he whips up some pancakes. I pause to read him some super-fascinating things I learned in my Bible study yesterday, and Lexi comes in for a hugsie. (She is REALLY into hugsies right now.)

We sit down at the table to enjoy our protein pancakes and air-fried chicken sausage with coffee and water. We watch half an episode of the World Cruise travelers while we eat. They’re in Mauritius, which we’ve never heard of, but it’s near Africa. Pretty place!

After breakfast, Ryan gets ready to go to the garage to work for the day, which is the project he has been long-anticipating and needed this full day at home to complete. I take my message for Sunday, which I printed last night, and hole-punch it for my binder so it’s ready to go tomorrow. I also print a second copy for my friend Susie in the sound booth. She follows along and runs slides for me. I write her a little thank you note on the script. You have no idea how much I appreciate everyone who makes a Sunday morning go smoothly!

I pour a second cup of coffee and settle in at the desk to do my Bible study and some journaling. I start my study in Discovering Jesus in the Old Testament by Nancy Guthrie – the book I’ve been reading in daily all year. Last month I bought a four-volume set of daily Bible readings called Today in the Word, published by Moody. (Got the whole set for 50 cents at a thrift store…brand new!) I’ve been reading along in Matthew (start of volume 3) since I’m doing Old Testament study in the other book.

Our Sunday School class is studying about rest and stillness this month. (I create a calendar for them each month that gives daily readings for certain topics.) I find some good lessons in there to apply to my own life in some decisions that lie before us. To wrap up my Bible study time this morning, I read a little section from the Jacob Bible study I’m doing this summer. Darlene Schacht is the author and she wrote a recap on this week’s study that I really enjoy and find good to marinate on throughout this day.

Before I leave my Bible study area, I take some time to pray over my specific request list.

With Bible study time complete, I go move the sheets and quilt from the washer to the dryer and go check on Ryan to see how Operation: Organization is going out in the garage! He has everything pulled out and is cleaning tubs and pondering his placement of everything.

I come back into the beauty of air conditioning and put today’s essential oils in the diffuser. Today’s recipe is “Relax and Uplift” and is a combo of Patchouli and Bergamot. I decide that before I sit on the couch to scrapbook, I’m going to water all the indoor plants. We have seven indoor plants, and I give them all a little drink!

Now it’s time for my favorite part of the day: scrapbooking! I settle in on the couch with warmed-up coffee, a fresh 32-ounce tumbler of water, two protein balls, and the remote. I find a nice summer Hallmark TV movie starring Autumn Reeser and Brennan Elliott – two of my favorites.

Today I’m working on my chronological scrapbook of our daily adventures, and I also hope to work on Lexi’s year three chronological book. Ryan takes a break to come in for a coffee refill and I go out to the garage with him to check on his progress. It’s looking SO NICE. He’s consolidating tubs, labeling them, and he has a few that I haven’t made labels for. So I come in and create the new labels in Canva, print and laminate them and take them out to him so he can continue his work!

It’s possible I get a bit sidetracked while I’m out there and start helping him sort a few more tubs. And I find some paper towel and toilet paper that needs to come into the house for redistribution. And I find a piece of wall art from a previous home that I think would go beautifully in our current home. I’m such an Amelia Bedelia.

AFTERNOON:

I come back inside and resume scrapbooking and movie watching until Ryan tells me he’s going to be ready for lunch. I’ve asked him for a half hour heads-up to cook!

I scrapbook a while longer and then stop to pull the bedding from the dryer so I can make the bed. I decide I should probably do some version of getting dressed, since I’m still in my jammies. Some friends of ours are supposed to stop by later today to pick up patio pavers from us and while they know it’s a work day for us, I figure I should make a mild attempt on my appearance. Plus – the capsule wardrobe ensemble of the day awaits! I pause the movie while I do this side task.

Even though Ryan hasn’t given me the heads up to start cooking lunch, I’m starting. I know I will need to eat even if he isn’t ready. I fill up a big pot with water and Thieves to clean the produce we bought at the store last night. I start with the zucchini, since I need it for lunch, but I’ll keep swapping out more produce while I cook so I can get that done.

For lunch I make taco meat using lean ground turkey and our homemade taco seasoning recipe. I also try a new-to-us recipe called Skillet Mexican Zucchini. I’m skeptical as I see it cooking, but WHOA. It’s really good. I eat a helping of meat with the skillet zucchini on top. Ryan makes a whole nacho plate with chips, salsa, meat, cheese, and the skillet dish on top. He fully approves! While we eat, we watch the second half of the world cruise episode we started this morning, and Lexi has her Kong. She has so patiently waited for her lunch!

After lunch, the dishwasher is full, so we run it, and I clean up and put away all the lunch food that is left over. (I try to avoid cooking on Sundays if I can – just so I have more time to rest – so if I can cook on Saturday and have leftovers later, I’m going to choose that every time.) I go out to the garage to see Ryan’s progress, which looks AMAZING. Then I finish cleaning all the produce: carrots, apples strawberries, blackberries, celery, tomatoes, and zucchini. With all that done, I grab the ingredients for dinner and throw them in the slow cooker. Tonight is honey sesame chicken!

Ryan carries out the TWELVE tubs that have been sitting in our living room for the past month. We are both so over them. They had been in my parents’ attic, and we have done a ton of sorting and purging – whittling this number down from I’m-not-even-sure-what it was before. But to be able to walk through the living room again legitimately makes me want to cry.

I’m back in my seat on the couch to resume my movie and scrapbooking. I even have a little treat: my sugar-free lemon cookies I made for the baking challenge Bingo. Just one cookie is super filling. I am so glad I made these!

I work hard on scrapbooking and then take a break to check on Ryan. The garage looks AMAZING. I am so proud of him. He is so organized, and I love every single idea he has for making it both aesthetically pleasing and functional. While I’m up, I grab some yogurt with honey, homemade granola, and strawberries. I give Lexi her snack Kong, and then she is OUT on the couch. Sweet girl.

My movie ends, so I refill my coffee (and the K-Cup basket, which is empty) and change the channel to some Lakefront Bargain Hunt Renovation. Back to scrapbooking I go! I’m almost caught up in my chronological book!

My friend whose husband is heading here to pick up pavers sends me a message to say he’ll arrive in about 45 minutes. I let Ryan know and keep scrapbooking.

EVENING:

Ryan needs a few more labels for storage tubs, so I make those and marvel at the TREMENDOUS work he has done in the garage today. It looks amazing, and for the first time since my parents’ move, we can park both cars in there again! What a gift! He cleans up, loads the car with the last of the rummage that we didn’t sell, and prepares to take it to the thrift store for a donation. Lexi is really hungry, so I give her a dinner Kong and unload the dishwasher.

Our friend has arrived to load pavers, so he and his buddy are out in the yard, working on that. I finish unloading the dishwasher and decide to hand wash the dishes that remain in the sink so Ryan doesn’t have to do it later. He has worked SO HARD today. I’m on my fourth water tumbler (which means I’m on bonus water from what I “make myself” drink every day). I’m listening to a Marco from my friend Charity. She has sent me three since I’ve had time to watch any, so I’m behind!

I start prepping some rice to go with the chicken in the slow cooker. I want to make sure dinner is ready to go when Ryan gets back from dropping off the rummage. When I’m done listening to the Marcos, I turn on my Psalm 119 music. I am almost ready for a new section to learn, but I still want to listen to the section I just learned – so I can sing along!

The rice is done, I shred the chicken in the slow cooker, and Ryan should be home any minute. I’m admittedly a little sad that this day has been as disjointed as it has been. I had grand visions of largely never leaving the couch, and that certainly hasn’t happened. So while I finish up dinner prep, I do some attitude-adjustment praying. Our verse this month is Psalm 118:24 – This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. I need to do a better job.

I sit on the kitchen floor for a little while to pray, Ryan gets home and jumps in to help the guys load pavers, and I come back inside to eat some dinner. It’s 7 p.m. and I need to eat something. Since my dinner from our date night last night was chicken and rice, I warm up my leftovers from that, add some of the new chicken I just made to round it out to a full meal, and dive in.

Ryan comes inside, fills a plate, and eats his dinner. The guys have left with everything they can fit on their trailer today. They’ll have to come back in a couple of days to get more. While he eats, I write in a graduation card we need to take to church tomorrow.

Lexi is eager to go on a walk, so after Ryan eats, we take a stroll around the lake. Lexi gets to see some of her FAVORITE friends and doles out all kinds of hugs and kisses. When we get home, I water all our flowers and the garden, and then we can come inside for the night. Ryan feels gross from his day of garage working, so he takes a shower. I go back to the couch to resume scrapbooking.

Ryan brings me a final cup of coffee for the night, and we sit down to watch some Extreme Pools on the Magnolia Network. I call it quits on the scrapbooking and enjoy a bowl of cottage cheese with berries and almonds, a GORGEOUS sunset, and some time with Ryan and Lexi.

I need to write the blog, so while we keep watching billion(ish) dollar pool designs, I write tomorrow’s post. When I finish that, I run through tomorrow’s message out loud one more time, with Ryan and Lexi for an audience. I put all my supplies for church (Bible, binder with my message, index cards to pass out to the congregation, and the graduation card) on the table so we don’t forget anything critical in the morning!

Then I take a shower and wash my hair while Ryan does his Bible study time. I do my skin care routine and dry my (extremely, painfully tangled) hair. Ryan washes the last of today’s dishes and puts away the ones I washed earlier. I fill Lexi’s Kongs for tomorrow, and Ryan sets the coffee pot.

We wrap up the day right around midnight! And there you have it! A Saturday in June!
