When Ryan
and I were first married, he almost always worked the 4th of July,
and once he was off duty, we would hurry to fireworks over a lake about an hour
from where we lived. We went there almost every year until 2020, and then our
traditions changed. In 2020, we were less than two weeks away from starting our
job at WillowBridge, so we stayed home on the 4th. In 2021, we took
tenants to watch fireworks, and we ended up not being able to see any from the
vantage point we tried. (We’d been promised it was the perfect spot.)
Last year, Lexi was little and we weren’t sure how she would handle fireworks,
so we stayed home to make sure she was okay. She slept, and we watched them on
TV.)
This year felt
full circle, except rather than going TO a lake for fireworks, we live on the
lake! Alas, we had no idea if anyone would even do fireworks. Lexi has proven
to do well with fireworks until they are close and loud. Even then, she’s not
really scared of them. She thinks they mean someone is here to see us (Like a
knock on the door) and her tail wags a million miles an hour as she barks and
runs to the door.
But I get ahead
of myself with the stories of yesterday…
We started the day
just like any other, actually, with an early morning alarm. We were on the road
by 7:30 to help some friends move. They were part of our moving crew back in February,
so we wanted to return the favor! They had actually done about half the move
the day before and mostly had furniture left to transport. They were so
organized and had everything ready to go when we (and some others) arrived.
Ryan was much more helpful than I was, but I carried what I could and took
pictures for the homeowner.
Our friends had
a goal to start at 8 and be done by noon, and indeed, we finished at 11:56. We
had lunch with them and then came home for the rest of the day.
We sat outside
to enjoy the lake for a while and then took a long, long nap. When we woke up,
we found pontoons anchored out in the lake, enjoying the perfect-weather day.
There were a
few scattered fireworks here and there that we caught as the darkness fell, but
there actually weren’t as many as some of the previous nights!
It may not have
been a fourth that looked like days of yore, but it was still completely
enjoyable. Still a day of goodness and rest.
Hope you
enjoyed your day too!
