The Saturday Six

One.

In honor of, you know, BUYING A HOUSE!!!! this week, I thought I'd share this post I loved, because it got me itching like crazy to be able to set up my new office in our new house! I have so many ideas, but I know that this room, more than any other, will probably look far different {and here's to hoping far better} than I can even imagine in my head! But Anne's office is so cute and has me eager to dig in!

Two.

Anyone else struggle with wanting to be liked by everyone? All the time? While this post is geared toward writers, it has wise, wise words for all of us on WHO really holds our worth.

Three.

We wanted to get a little gift for the people who owned the home we just bought, but that's always an awkward quest, because we don't know them very well. While perusing through Etsy looking for something else, I stumbled upon this shop, and I decided a Christmas ornament might be a winner. It represents a little piece of who we are, since we love ornaments that tell a story and also passes along our gratitude to this couple who tended the home for the past several years. {Covered the homeowners' names to protect their privacy. It really doesn't come with tissue like that!}

Four.
Obviously we don't have kids, but if you do, and you're looking for some ideas for their Easter basket {HELLO!!! EASTER IS ONE WEEK AWAY!!!}, this post has some great suggestions for things that open up conversation to the actual reason for Easter. I think the resurrection party is a pretty great idea, myself. {But then I love a party....}

Five.

In the four years I worked at WBCL, there are a handful of guests that I loved so much, I wanted to be real-life friends with them. They were just contagious with joy and Jesus, and I am so glad I got to "know" them through their interviews and our interactions, however brief. One such guest was Dr. Michelle Watson, who writes and speaks about relationships between fathers and daughters. She's fun, she's spunky, she's wise, she's passionate, and I won't lie - I'd give a whole lot for a batch of the cookies she posts pictures of semi-regularly! This week she wrote a post about what she's observed about fatherhood by watching Chip Gaines on Fixer Upper. Obviously you know of my love for Fixer Upper, and I agree with her in this post. Chip does seem to be the real deal as a dad and husband, and I love that more than the show itself.

Any Anne of Green Gables fans out there? I do love Anne, and Prince Edward Island is on my traveling bucket list, so when I saw a new series released called "Prince Edward Island Dreams" - I think I was pretty much already hooked. Book one in this series by Liz Johnson is called The Red Door Inn. Now what do I love nearly as much as the thought of traveling to PEI? The thought of anything relating to a bed and breakfast. The book, I imagined, could be the perfect happy place to spend reading time, so I did just that this week!

Marie Carrington is in her late twenties and by most standards, she's deemed a lovely young woman with a strong foundation and a bright future. But we meet her as she sits on a ferry dock, counting her literal pennies and unsuccessfully trying to ward off a panic attack. Her unspoken plight captures the attention of Jack Sloane, an older gentleman with a dream in his soul. His late wife, Rose, had longed to open a bed and breakfast on Prince Edward Island, but when cancer claimed her life before the dream had a chance to come true, Jack determined he would honor her memory by creating such a haven.

Both broke and broken in spirit, Marie needs a safe place to turn, and clueless about the finer points of hospitality, Jack needs a good eye and soft touch over his newly acquired property. Jack offers Marie a ferry ticket to the island in exchange for her expertise in preparing the Inn to open. She agrees, but questions that decision when she arrives and finds a young man working to restore the Inn who seems consumed by bitterness and skepticism toward life and the human race . The young man, Seth, is Jack's nephew and it becomes clear that while both Seth and Marie are wounded and wary, they need to call a truce toward each other to complete the task at hand and make Rose's dream come true. Of course letting down a guard, even temporarily, means taking a risk that unbidden feelings could rise - and take over. And then when secrets bubble forth, rising higher than the feelings, everything seems in danger of being lost, including the Inn.

One thing I love about Liz's writing style is the way she blended storyline suspense with the gentleness of the Island. Prince Edward Island is a place people go to breathe. Many are drawn there hoping for the same haven that Anne found at Green Gables, and there is a quietness and calmness to the place that is evident on each page of the book. But that calm doesn't squelch the urgency of the story or the desire to find out what is happening in the hearts of all the characters. Liz's writing is a beautiful weaving. The characters are lovable, and the description is well-crafted. I've never been to the Island in person but I had no trouble imagining each place, each aroma, and possibly even the taste of each treat in the bakery. {Perils of reading while hungry.}

I appreciated the faith message throughout the book and the tactful manner of addressing hard topics and family dynamics. I am giddy that this will be a series and can't wait to read the next book, releasing this fall.

* Thanks, Revell, for sending a copy of this book my way in exchange for an honest review! *

The Saturday Six

One.
Why didn't Ryan and I think to take THIS kind of honeymoon? Seven months. Fifty states. Boom.

Two.

And Ryan should be SO GLAD we got married before I read this blog post. An Anne of Green Gables wedding?  Oh yes. I would have wanted to do this. For real. Swoon.

Three.

Now and then, I get questions about things I mention here on the blog, but I think the thing I've been questioned about the most was our rake that I talked about a few posts back. So many people asked, that I thought I would just tell everyone! :)   The rake is a True Temper, and we got ours last year at Lowe's. Here is the link to it on their site right now. What I love about it is...it's HUGE, so you can scoop up a lot of leaves in one swipe. Also, the construction of it is such that the leaves don't get stuck IN it. My old rake {which, granted, may have been an original prototype OF a rake, period} always got clogged, so I would swipe, flip, unclog....swipe, flip, unclog. You can imagine my joy. Anyway. We love this rake. If you're still looking for a good one, we give this one 4 thumbs up. {Two from each of us, in case you're scared.}

Four.

In OTHER news of things you might be looking for to make your life richer and fuller...a heated mattress pad. When Ryan and I got married, he had one, and it was pretty much one of the best things I'd ever encountered. Not quite a year into our marriage, it quit working, so this year, we went in search of a new one. We got this one, which has dual controls, so if one of us is done being warm, the other one doesn't have to suffer. We put the new one on our bed last week, and last Saturday, I didn't even get OUT of bed until 2 p.m. because I was so stinkin' snuggly in there! Ours is a Sunbeam and I couldn't find the specific one we got, but here is the link to their site. {We found ours at Wal-Mart.}

Five.

Loved this blog post by Katie Ganshert - a great reminder {in this season of much prayer for us} that sometimes God's YES is scarier than His no. Not that we should avoid embracing it, of course, but a reminder that just because it's yes doesn't mean it's easy!

Six.
While I pray for Ryan's good health for years and years to come, I hope if he were ever ill, I could care for him with this kind of love.

The Saturday Six

One.

A few weeks ago, I told you that I'd started doing the PhedoraFit workouts. I loved them because they were short and easy to do every day. And a month into it, she quit publishing new ones! BOO!!! I was just getting into my groove! So I've decided to try some of Katie Farrell's workouts from the Dashing Dish site. They're nowhere near as short or as easy, but they are GOOD!

Two.
Natasha has been blogging about the different provinces in Canada, which I've loved reading - because she makes history and geography FUN. :) This week her focus was on Prince Edward Island. I have this one on my list of places to visit someday - hopefully with my friend Julie - because we love Anne of Green Gables!

Three.

As a bit of an...ahem...voracious journal-keeper, I LOVED this. THIS RIGHT HERE is why I've written about far too much of the mundane. And with good reason!

Four.
I read this article this week - about single people in the church. Even though I'm no longer single, I'm learning that my heart is still SO TENDER toward those who are single. Whether you are single and longing to be married or you're single and perfectly content to remain that way, this is a good read. I'm still chewing on it.

Five.

Speaking of chewing on it...this week in church, we studied the many different ways people study the Bible. The speaker related the differences to animals {early bird, night owl etc.}. I learned that I am both a cow {chewing on the things I study for long periods of time} and a bat {learning by hearing and bouncing ideas off others.} In honor of this, I am now named the "MooBat." Not an attractive combo, by a long shot, but apparently accurate.

Loved this video that came out from last Saturday's Living Proof Life Simulcast with Beth Moore. This is a taste of the day!!

The Saturday Six

One.

Last Sunday was the first time I can remember that IWU ever put the campus on lockdown because of a tornado warning. {It may have happened before, but this was the first I could remember.} After they lifted the ban and students could go outside again, a girl named Katie Bankert took this photo with her iPhone. A double rainbow over the chapel building = looks God saturated to me!

Two.

My friend Kristin sent me this article of 11 life lessons you can learn from Anne of Green Gables. Oh how I love Anne. If I had six hours to kill right now, I'd watch those two movies straight through. Anyway...I think this is well written and has good stuff in it. And if you don't know Anne...you're missing out. :)

Three.

I've told you before - I was raised on hymns, and there's a part of me that still loves them so much {even though I also love contemporary music}. I'm a hymn purist. I don't like remade versions. I want big, anthem-y versions like you would have heard in church in days gone by. My friend Amy reminded me this week of the hymn To God Be the Glory - which I've not heard in YEARS. So I had to hunt down a big version of it. I liked this one.

Four.

I LOVE THIS POST! I wish I'd written it! :) Ryan and I have such a deep desire for not only our marriage to be healthy and thriving, but for marriages around us to be the same way, so I love reading posts like this. I'm so excited to read that we do these things already - makes me feel affirmed that we're doing something right!

Five.

I surprised Ryan this week with a new picture for our house! We both love this photo we took on our cruise - you might recognize it from the top of the blog! I had it printed on canvas, and now it hangs in our bedroom {which is slowly morphing into a beach theme).

Six.
For those of you out there who are my fellow OCD friends...enjoy this one.

Thankfulness, Day 23: It's so hard when you want to say thanks to someone who has passed away...and they can't hear those words you wish you could say. Today, write a letter to someone who had an impact on your before they passed away. Maybe you'll want to send it to one of their kids or grandchildren so they know the impact. Or maybe you just want to commit the words to paper and save the letter to remind you of their investment. Either way - be grateful today for what they did to be part of your life!

August: Done

I think August can be classified as the month of the "last minute." Very little was planned ahead but it was still so full of FUN!!

* In the world of attempting to relocate...I went house hunting with my sister, Lori, and found a house I absolutely fell in love with, which resulted in increased prayers about the entire situation. Lori also helped me by heading up (aka doing every last stitch of work regarding) my yard sale. Very excited about how that turned out - both in $$ made and stuff ditched! I also started the paperwork process of being able to purchase a new home in case mine does sell soon - getting the pre-work out of the way!

* In the land of entertaining...it was fun to have Lori and Jeff here to open up Bekah's B&B (which is now sorely lacking the first B...we sold it in the rummage). I hosted Pancakes with the Princess for my friends, the Hubbards, and had another overnighter party with Julie Crandall when she came for the Anne of Green Gables fest!

* In Mid-Morning news...I made my first appearance as an engineer WHILE talking on the air at the same time. Took multi-tasking to a whole new level. I was also so excited to receive invitations from Lynne to help with the show as a whole...new ideas...brainstorming...all that. Very exciting. Have I mentioned I love my job? And while it wasn't for Mid-Morning, I also recorded my first station promo! Freaks me out every time I hear it on the air. I spent Lynne's vacation week researching like CRAZY - left her a whole stack of show ideas - complete with a table of contents for each one. NERD!

* Had some time to cook...trying out Judy Reynolds' chocolate and caramel crispie bars, plus a peach cobbler (never cooked with peaches before - ever!). I didn't love the cobbler...I'm more of a crisp girl. But I loved the crispie bars! Tried - and loved - the new pepperoni pizza chili recipe. For the Anne of Green Gables party, I made a shortbread cookie recipe (turned out mediocre...but cute!), raspberry cordial (minus the alcohol), and a tortellini caesar salad. AND I made a fantastic cream cheese danish that you're going to love!

* Acquired my neighbor's tree in my backyard...during the great windstorm of 2011. So thankful for Dad and his friends who came over and cleaned it up so my house isn't too horrible looking while it is on the market!

* Worked on a "fresh start" with some new clothes and accessories (I like to do one or two big clothing blitzes each year) for the new job. No more mid-year slump for me! And in that fresh start business...a new day planner and color coded system!

* Also did some new stuff...including going to my first Thirty-One party, eating at Biaggi's for the first time, and going to my first ever Fort Wayne Tin Caps game - which you'll see more about later this week!

The Anne Fest

My friend Julie Crandall and I have a life-dream: to one day travel to Prince Edward Island in Canada, and have a whole week(ish) of Anne of Green Gables bliss. We LOVE Anne. Okay so actually we love Gilbert (in the movie, anyway), but we also love Anne.

At this moment, such a trip is financially beyond our scope of attainability, so we did the second best thing we could think of. We had an Anne weekend! Julie's husband (who deserves husband -of-the-year award for doing things like this with actual joy) kept the kids so she could come to my house and spend part of a weekend watching movies with me. THANK YOU, JON, FOR MAKING THAT POSSIBLE!!!

So last Friday night, after I came home from work, Julie showed up! We started out with dinner. I tried a new recipe, which in my estimation was a wild success and you'll be seeing it on here next time I make it: cheesy tortellini Caesar salad with homemade croutons. YUM.
Remember those cookies I made for Lynne? Well the whole reason I made shortbread cookies to begin with was because they were from the Anne of Green Gables cookbook. (Or so the online recipe said.)
We ate at the table and everything! (We decided to forgo the plum pudding with dead mouse. That will only mean something to you if you're familiar with Anne.)

Let the festivities begin!!

Julie brought dessert - and it was h.e.a.v.e.n.l.y. I think she said they were called tuxedo bars. They had a chocolate brownie base, raspberry jam, raspberries, a topping of white chocolate/cream cheese/whipped cream - and then raspberries on top. I think its deliciousness is self-explanatory.

And then we began to watch. Oh Anne. I just love her. Julie can quote this movie almost word for word. I love it!!!

Movies are best when watched from the comfort of a fleecy blanket.

I have lots of fleecy movie-watching blankets. :)

The movies, if you've not seen them, are extraordinarily long - between 3 and 4 hours each. So the first movie ran until midnight, and then we decided to get some sleep. We got up at 10 on Saturday and I made breakfast - another keeper recipe you'll see soon: cream cheese danish.

Breakfast in "bed" while watching Anne of Avonlea!!

Yes. Braeya attended the party too. She always shows up for the food. Wonder where she gets that trait?

We also made authentic raspberry cordial. It was pretty good!

When the second movie ended, Julie had been gone almost a whole day, so she headed home. (Neither of us are wild about the third movie anyway. It deviated too far from the original story.)

This was so fun. Loved getting to hang out with Julie, loved an excuse to watch eight(ish) hours of movies without guilt, and loved a party!! Now to save my pennies for P.E.I.....
