PODCAST TUESDAY!!! We're celebrating our big day in blogland on the podcast as well as in the post below! Enjoy!
Well, you would think with a day this momentous, that I would be having a MUCH bigger party than this meager offering. But alas, the occasion crept up on me, and I refuse to feel too guilty about a tiny party.
So what's the occasion, you might ask?
Today marks ten years since my first blog post went live on this little blogaroo. A whole decade in blogland! WOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
For those of you who don't know the story, ten years ago, I was petrified of blogging. I read blogs. But no way was I about to do it. I had watched way too many crime shows of people who were cyber-stalked and I refused to submit my life to the world wide web for its consideration and my own potential endangerment.
In those days, to pacify my mother {who, to be fair, worked long past the age she probably wanted to just to put me through college}, I wrote an email column once a week and sent it off to those who wanted to receive it. Also to be fair, my subscribers were mostly her friends. It was a good exercise for me to write something weekly, knowing it would be read by someone other than God.
One of my co-workers, Jim, also subscribed, and one day he suggested I should start a blog. He told me it was basically the same as what I did, but it would allow me to reach more people. {Clearly he didn't watch the crime shows like I did.} I waved him off, and a short time later, he walked into my office, put a piece of paper on my desk, and said, "This is your blog address and password. Go blog."
And then I met you.
Through the tentative offering of my first post {which was a copy/paste effort from that most recent email and has the most unimaginative title...} my presence here began, and the ten years that have followed have provided the most beautiful and unexpected friendships and opportunities.
Without question, my blog hasn't "taken off" like some do, with thousands of followers and companies knocking on my door to partner with me. I'm not even sure I have a particular niche like so many bloggers do, but all of that is okay. This outlet, like any ministry of mine, is the Lord's to use like He wants to, and He can bring as many or few people as He wants to each day. I'll trust Him to make sure they're the right ones. The ones who need to read the message found here on any given day.
But to celebrate, I will tell you that in the last ten years...
* My picture offering has improved. I had 48 posts published before I finally caved in and {gasp!} posted a photo. And it was mediocre at best:
{That's a lake, in case you can't tell. It really is an unfortunate photo.}
* It was a whole different hair and weight decade for me. {And the season of my first ever plane ride in my entire life.}
* I've made some great new friends specifically through blogging. I'm not sure if she still reads anymore, but SkyePuppy was the first friend I met because of the blog and then got together with in real life. {If you still read, Skye, HI!!!!} In those early blogging days, my little team of consistent readers and commenters was made up of Phats {no longer a blogger, but still my real life friend and has been since story hour!}, Malott, Delta, and Christina. I still treasure each of them and the encouragement they gave me as I waded into these scary internet waters.
* My most-read post of all time was this one that I wrote in 2013 about an organization still very dear to my heart: Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep. The organization exists to provide a hospital photo session to parents who lose a child. After my nephew's stillbirth in 1988, I am still grateful for the hospital staff who encouraged us {as a family} to take pictures of Kirk, because now, they're all we have to remember him by! I always want to encourage other families who may be in the same situation to capture memories while they can.
* My most-read recipe of all time is the Cheesy Tortellini recipe, which is a little embarrassing, since my photography and staging were...um...lacking. But the recipe is indeed delicious!
* I've posted a lot of room tours and makeover posts, and while some of the newer ones may end up proving to be more well-read in the long run, this one remains the most-read. Maybe it's because I named it "My Coffee (Butler's) Kitchen" and people thought I actually had a butler's kitchen. Well I did...but it was my ONLY kitchen!
* In 2011, I started blogging every day, and I've continued to do it since then. And though blogging experts will tell you not to reinvent yourself excessively and to repost old material upon occasion, all my 3200-some posts from the last ten years have been original. No repeats.
* I mentioned I don't have a niche, and it's true! I'll blog about our daily life, lessons I'm learning from the Lord, projects {ohhhhhhhhhhhhh the projects} we're taking on around here, recipes, capsule wardrobes, and little mini-series story posts. I like to switch it up. Keeps it interesting.
* If you're new and haven't seen it, check out the list of posts about our love story. One of my favorite seasons on this blog. I think I scared all of you when that story began on here, because it had been happening in real life longer than I'd been talking about it on the blog. I think Ryan proposed about 4 days after I started telling you he even existed, and that freaked EVERYBODY out. I think you all thought I was marrying some random stranger I just met four days earlier!
* Incidentally, here's the post I wrote that introduced Ryan to you. Do you remember this one?
* If you have listened to the podcast, you know that I had NO recollection of the blog post Ryan declared his favorite. But I unearthed it, and here it is!
* You've walked all the roads with me. The desert, the beautiful relationship, the wedding, all our trips and monthiversaries, our projects and big move, my years in radio and my transition to being what I am now: wife, writer, and speaker. How grateful I am for this decade with you and all it has brought! Thanks for finding me along the way...wherever you did...and coming back all the time to check in on life in Shafferland!
* I'm excited to see what the next decade holds. I've been working on some new things for my own journey in writing and speaking, but I have no plans to let go of the old blogaroo. I have every intention of keeping it going just as it is, a space for stories of everything under the sun and a chance to interact with you for ten more years and counting!
* JUST FOR FUN: I'm not one to ask for comments, but today I think it would be fun to hear from you so I'm not all alone at my party! I'd love to hear how you came to find this corner of the world wide web and either what you've liked best about your time spent here or what you'd like to read more about in the time to come!
Thanks for celebrating with me! HAPPY TEN YEAR BLOGIVERSARY TO ALL OF US!!!

Congrats!!! Celebrate with ice cream! :-) I've been blogging for nearly 9 years I think but just 5.5 with our current blog.
Woohoo!! Happy 10th!!!!
Also!!! We have the same blog-iversary, but you're 3 years older than I am (-:
To many more!
Happy Blogiversary! As you know, I came to your blog through my mom who had heard your story on the radio and said, "I think you two might have some things in common!" That was about 4 years ago and I'm still here! I love how open and relatable you are, and how you are such a great friend to everyone both on and off the blog. Looking forward to continuing to witness whatever God has in store for your life! Love and prayers to you both!
Hi Bekah, I have been following your blog for a couple of years. I think I found you when you linked up to Kelly's Korner's blog. I enjoy knowing that you will have something new every day. I have listened to you podcasts while walking at the gym. They are the perfect length for my walk. You and Ryan are at a similar stage of you marriage as my husband and I although we are s bit older. We just celebrated our 4th Anniversary. I look forward to seeing how God continues to use you in the future.
I found your blog through Kelly's Korner and I have read every day since..probably 4 ish years. I like it because it is comfortable and real…nothing too over the top. I like your variety of topics, like you mentioned. As a happily married TX girl (18 years) and a mom of 2 kids, it is fun and refreshing to hear about your marriage and family adventures. I think I have commented only one other time and it was about your "kid comments" and how they seemed to be typically negative in nature and for some reason it bothered me, but maybe that was my issue at the time…obviously it did not keep me from reading(: You are a very good writer and I appreciate you sharing! And I would like to add, you look fabulous and so healthy! Keep up the good work!
Leslie - I don't think I knew you had a blog before the one you have now! Was it a pre-family blog?
Tamar - HAPPY BLOGIVERSARY to you too! Sounds like we both need to do some celebrating today!
Erica - I'm indebted to your mom for introducing us and urging us to uncover a beautiful friendship. So grateful for you and all the thought-provoking conversations we've had on and off the blog!
Sandi - Well it's so good to hear from you and I'm glad you enjoy something new every day {I realize for some it might be a bit too much of the Shaffers!!} Also glad to hear we are getting in extra workouts with you at the gym. That should cover my celebratory treat, right? Happy anniversary!! :) Thanks for saying hi today!
Anonymous - So good to hear from you today too and get to know a bit of what you enjoy seeing here! I apologize that my kid comments have come across as negative! :( I do dearly love kids and we have so much fun with all our nieces and nephews! It's true that we don't feel called to have kids of our own {at least unless God changes something in the future} and while we take our share of criticism for that, it doesn't mean we don't love kids! I'm glad my missteps with my words didn't keep you from coming back to read and I'll definitely strive to be more aware of how that message comes across in the future! And THANK YOU for your kind words about my healthy living pursuits. I ran across a picture today taken two years ago and MY GOODNESS. I was in worse shape than I knew. Sometimes the angle is your friend and sometimes it just tells the truth. This picture told the truth. I'm grateful for the chance I've had to improve my health and self-esteem!
I found your blog through Pinterest. I believe it was your one bowl brownie recipe? Whenever I find recipes via Pinterest from blogs, I almost poke around the blog a little bit to see if it's something I'd like to keep reading or not (one can't read all the blogs there are in the world, after all). I read a post that referenced something about Indiana and I remember thinking that I hadn't come across any Hoosier bloggers and then you referenced something about Marion, IN and I was like, she's from northern Indiana (like moi (before I loved to OH))? And then you mentioned Indiana Wesleyan and financial aide and I was like, oh this is weird. By the time I read you IN WE post, you were already working at WBCL but I could tell you had worked at IN WE. My brother Joe actually worked in financial aide for IN WE and he knew who you were. I think you guys worked on different "sides" of the office so he didn't have much interaction with you. I told him you were at WBCL (he went to your going away party at IN WE) and had a blog in which you wrote every day. That was just a side story- I would have kept reading your blog even if you hadn't worked with my brother :). I think your blog does have a niche- not many bloggers write EVERY single day. Posting something every day shows a commitment to your writing, to your blog and to the ministry that your blog ultimately serves- glorifying God.
Happy Blogversary! Ten years of doing anything is an accomplishment to be proud of!
I'm another reader who can't remember for certain how I ended up at your blog but I've been checking in for a while now. What hooked me at first was your connection to Fort Wayne as that's where my husband and I lived, met, and married. We've lived in Dallas for 11 years now but Indiana continues to strike chords in us.
For me, your blog has been a God-send! I have learned SO MUCH from reading all of them for the past several years: inspirational thoughts, recipes, places to visit, ideas for dates with my husband, and the list goes on! I feel like I've made a true friend, another "daughter" in knowing you and even having chances to visit with you in person! Thankful that I was introduced to you through WBCL. Thank you for sharing your insights and adventures on this wonderful blog site! God bless you for being a blessing to so many! Love & Prayers, your #1 fan! :)
Hmmm, I probably had to start reading your blog since I'm a real life friend ;). JK! I love the variety of topics your bring to your blog. From day to day life to an inspirational blog that nails you between the eyes. And it doesn't hurt that occasionally I get a shout-out. It's been a privilege to watch not only your blog grow but you as well. May God continue to bless your writing as you reach more people. Love ya!
Happy Blogiversary! I started reading your blog sometime while you worked at WBCL. Since we lived in the same town, it was interesting to read of your exploits. Now you have moved "west", but I still enjoy reading about what you do. Keep on churning them out!
Hi Bekah! I'm a very sporadic blogger who definitely has no niche:) I started reading yours (I think maybe through Sarah Flying Kites) a few years ago when I was about 30 and single. I think you were either still single or just getting into your relationship with Ryan. I had really come to a point in my single life where I was content and enjoying it for what it was, but I felt that connection and it kept me coming back! And like you, things happened pretty quick, and at 31 I got married. Now I have an almost toddler with baby number two on the way! And actually living in Northeast IN after spending most of my life in IL so I was able to hear the girl behind the blog on the radio for awhile:) I still enjoy reading- Happy Blogiversary!
it is "anonymous" again(: no need to apologize…it was several years ago and I have to remember that it is your personal blog and you are openly sharing your personal thoughts ( and btw, it was not about your decision to most likely not be a mom..it was more just in general) And good for you for doing what is best for your family... As a social worker, I see many many kids that are born in to families that are not prepared or even want the child…anyway, maybe there is a dog in your future? (:
again, really enjoy your blog!!
Maria - Well, if you told me that Joe was your brother, then I completely spaced it and I'm sorry. But I so enjoyed that story this morning! Yes, he worked more with the adult campus and I worked with the traditional students. I enjoyed working with him, though! :) I love knowing you showed up via the brownie recipe. LOL!! That makes me way happier than it should. {Still one of my faves. Never found a from-scratch brownie recipe I liked better!}
BoyMom - Man, Texas is showing up today! I'm glad you're one of them! I'm glad Fort Wayne brought us together, and I'm glad you keep checking in! Nice to meet you!
Shari - ahhhhh my sweet friend. I think of you EVERY TIME we drink from those mugs you got us. And that is often! :) You are a blessing and joy to me. Glad to have gotten to know you in real life, as well!
Kari - HAD TO READ, huh? ;) You are a blessing to me, and I'm glad you read even though you hear the same stories in emails every single day. :) And I'm glad Ryan says we're like sisters. Because we really are. You can thank your mom for that!
Karen - I'm like a pioneer! Struck out for the western lands! I'm so glad you started reading and that you have stuck with me even in my pioneering!!!
Sarah - I owe Sarah Flying Kites big time because her blog brings a lot of people to mine! {I really don't spend time analyzing traffic because it doesn't matter, but whenever I glance at stats, her blog is always near the top!} I'm glad you made your way over and CONGRATULATIONS on the marriage, the baby and the baby to come! This is great! I'm excited for you!! :)
Anonymous - OH you are sweet! Thank you so much for coming back to say more! I do have to say that in my early 20's I wanted kids {or I think I did. Maybe I just thought it's what you were supposed to do in the natural progression of life} and I'm so glad I did NOT have them then, because I was such a mess that I can't imagine how much of a mess THEY would have been! I feel that if God did call us to adopt kids {which is really the only option on the table at my age now}, we would at least be mentally equipped to do a good job! But I think you might have a point - dog might be a more realistic option! Well. Maybe. Braeya would still kill us.
Bekah,
I really don't know how long I have been reading your blog. I think I started somewhere around 2011-2012. I have enjoyed being part of your online family and to see the journey you have taken. Congratulations on 10 years!! Nice job on Jim's part to kick-start your blog. I remember when you blew the doors off and revealed Ryan!! One of the most powerful blogs you have written and moving was "The Words I Never Thought I Could Say". One of my most favorite was "When You Stop Bossing God Around".
Happy Blogaversary, Bekahbits Shafferland! I don't know, how did I find out about the blog???? Maybe you send an IM to me...maybe Angi IM'ed me, but I've been relatively good about regular reading. Favorite blogs? Perhaps the dessert and the truly passionate cry of your heart? Perhaps the book because it was a huge leap of faith and such a good work. Perhaps the Ryan intro? Cuz, well, he brightens corners, doesn't he? God bless you and Ryan as you continue your walk in faith, hand in hand and I'll keep reading. Lois
Congratulations on 10 years! I heard of your blog from WBCL. My favorite part is the Saturday six. Although we are generations apart, I enjoy your blog. May God bless you and Ryan. Keep writing and sharing!
Gaylene Carpenter
Congratulations on your blog being 10 years old! I've been a daily reader since your days on WBCL. Loved BLT and still think of you on Thursday morning while working here at home. I miss hearing you and Lynne together. I have enjoyed reading your blog and feel I've been able to keep up with your life since you left the radio station. I wish you well as you continue to write daily. Here's to another 10 years!
Marsha Kiester
Hey there my blogging buddy! Happy 10 years! I'm pretty sure I've been there since the beginning, and I don't plan on going anywhere. I'm so glad that even though we almost never get to see each other, we can still keep in touch. I love getting all kinds of glimpses into your fun adventures...and with Ryan along for the ride now, it's twice the fun! Keep up the great work.
Love ya!
Not sure how I first found your blog, but I love the variety of your posts. And I love how encouraging and challenging your writing is! Thanks for continuing to blog and share your life with people you don't know! :)
Hi Bekah!
I think I started reading your blog sometime after the entire staff at Malott's Blog started reading and commenting on mine.
One of my great memories was of the time my mom and I met you while we were on our trip. After a couple hours, the waiter asked, "So, you're old friends, right?" Absolutely!
It's a little harder to comment these days, because at work we aren't allowed to go on social media, and lunchtime is when I used to do some of my blogging and a lot of my commenting when I was at my pre-Trip job. I try to catch up with you every now and then when I have a few minutes to rub together.
Your Saturday Six has sent me down many an enjoyable rabbit hole. And of course, after reading your traversing of the desert, it was an inexpressible joy to read your love story! That proposal video made me cry quite a few times (because I kept coming back again). Now that Ryan has become an integral part of your blog, it's just a further expansion of the joy!
Happy 10-year Blogiversary!!!
Mark! I have so enjoyed getting to know you through the blog and appreciate all the encouragement and support you have given me on different posts I've written! You showed up just in time for all the fun if you started in 2011ish!! :)
Lois - YES!! Ryan brightens every corner! Such fun and such a great addition to the blog part of life as well as EVERY part of life. I'm glad that although way too many miles separate us, you're still here this way!! :)
Gaylene - What a blessing to hear from you, and I'm so glad to hear you enjoy the Saturday Six! I have fun putting those together every week. I'm so glad you read...age is just a number!!
Marsha - I miss BLT as well!! That was such a fun show, and of course, has a dear place in my soul as the place of my proposal! :) I'm so glad you are still hanging out with us even though I'm gone from the station!! :)
Christina - You've been here since BEFORE the beginning and I'm so glad. Wouldn't have it any other way!! You're one of my life-gifts!
Skye - YOU ARE HERE!! What a treat to hear from you. I should send a gift basket to the entire staff at Malott's blog to thank him for introducing us!! :) I'm glad we can be old-soul friends! :)
My Dearest Bekah, Actually, I remember exactly when I began reading your blog. You had come to our Christmas Open House back in Dec 2010 and I remember thinking, "What a nice girl." It was after that Ryan was telling me about your blog and that you had written a book. Little did we know then what God had in store for you, for Ryan and for our family. I also remember thinking what was "blogging" and how could anyone think of something interesting to write about every single day? After reading your blog a few days I realized what a beautiful God given gift you possessed. You have been given a unique way of ultimating sharing Jesus with the world. So "Happy Bloggiversary!!" and just celebrate with a cup of coffee!! Love you like a daughter!!
Well this made me SMILE!!! I remember that day and how amazing your house was...and I had no idea it was the first of many visits! :) Thanks so much for your kind words and for raising the best son EVER. :) {Well, two of them. But I'll just claim the one.} I am on my second cup of coffee...and I told Ryan after his sickness this week {which led him to skip TWO DAYS of coffee} that I now understand how you feel drinking it alone. No fun!!!
:):)
Yes, Bekah, I AM here, and you can thank Mark Allman for the impeccable timing. He emailed me yesterday (that had to be some sleuthing!) to let me know that was the special day. Your friends are looking out for you. :)
Whoopsie!...I'm a day late to the party! During the summer when my kiddos are home, I don't get online every day and so I get behind on the blog and have to play catch-up sometimes. :)
I found your blog after I "met" you through my radio! :) I felt like we were super friends right away even though you had NO clue who I was or that I even existed! Haha! Even though I miss you terribly on WBCL, I am so happy for your new season and so so thankful that I can still get my Bekah-fix through your blog and podcast. And meeting you in person at the Beth Moore event was so fun (even though you probably don't remember). I felt like I was meeting a celebrity!
I'm late to the party--I was on a trip with teens that included a twelve hour bus ride, one way. I don't remember how I found you, but I've loved reading the past few years. Congrats on 10 years!!
Skye - WOW! I had no idea!
Tia - Of course I remember! I loved that Beth Moore event, not just because it was {HELLO!} Beth Moore, but because I got to meet friends - you included! You're actually in my scrapbook. :)
So Completely - God bless you! Twelve hours one way and you're in you're right mind! I'm so glad you're here and reading, regardless of how you got here! :)
I first came across your blog because I had heard about it on WBCL and wanted to see your gorgeous wedding pictures. I've been hooked ever since! :)
Awww Mollie I love that!! Thank you so much for popping in to say hi! I do love those wedding pictures. Our photographer and our family-razzi really pulled it off for me!!
Happy Anniversary! 10 years is a long time and quite the accomplishment -- think of all you have documented! Irreplaceable.
I started following you when you started working for WBCL! And I think I've listened to each one of your podcasts - Ryan reminds me so much of Klint & I can relate to much of what you say -- so fun!
Congrats!!!
