The Shafferland Shuffle

How in THE WORLD is it the last Sunday in January already?!!?!? On the flip side, after last weekend's unseasonably warm weather, I'll take it being the last Sunday in January, because it means we are that much closer to SPRING! Yes, please! :)

* Though we dearly love our Sunday naps, we had abbreviated versions of them last week, because we met up with Ryan's family for dinner and the celebration of his sister's 30th birthday! Dinner was at Half Moon, which is a local restaurant, and Ryan LOVES their food but hadn't eaten there in a very long time. It was his first really big meal post-surgery, and he ate every single bite and loved it! AND he didn't get sick. BONUS!
* Ryan had to return to work on Monday, and it was so busy, he didn't even get to come home for lunch. Sadness!! But I baked snickerdoodle brownies to take to his work friends, along with a thank you note for how they filled in for him while he was off work on gallcation. (Ryan fed a piece to Brutus. Ha!) We didn't schedule anything for that evening, because I feared he might be tired from his first day back, so we just hung out and I started reading my novel for the week, which I loved.
* Tuesday was a very busy day, including a podcast interview and some other work I had to get done quickly, and I had to do my workout early in the day. I know some people enjoy working out early in the day, but I'm not one of them. I MUCH prefer to do it later at night. So it was kind of a struggle, but I got through it. We had Bible study that night, and Miss Pheebs was there and snuggled up between Ryan and me for the whole thing. No arguments from me!
* Wednesday morning, I saw the most BEAUTIFUL sight! A tree full of fat robins! I know it's not spring and we have more winter to come, but I called it my tree full of hope! That night, Ryan and I enjoyed another night in and we actually cooked dinner together. We love to do that, but normally I have it ready when he gets home from work, so we don't have the chance. It was fun to work side by side! And then - the workout. Back in its regularly scheduled slot. And not as much fun as eating. LOL!
* Thursday, Braeya and I hung out together for a reading party, and then while Ryan worked overtime, I headed out to get my hairs done. (Not a fair gig for him, is it? But he got pizza for dinner, so I think that made it worth it for him.) It had been MONTHS since I had a highlight, and the hair was, well, white. Sigh. After marinating for a while under some foil and saran wrap, I came home a new woman!
* Friday night, our church had a chili supper and bake sale to raise money, and I wanted to take a dessert for the bake sale. I made buckeye brownies, and they're not hard to make at all, but they do have multiple layers and require cooling time, so I was up at 6:30 in the morning baking the brownie layer! We went to the chili supper when Ryan got off work, and it was delicious! We rounded out the night with some grocery shopping and coffee and (of course) DATELINE! lol! We're so old.
* Yesterday we started a new thing, which I can't wait to tell you more about! Alphabetical dates! Throughout the year, we'll go on a date themed by each letter of the alphabet. {I found the idea on Pinterest. Don't think I'm more creative than I actually am.} We were supposed to go on the "A" date a couple of weeks ago but had to postpone it until Ryan could eat real food again. So yesterday was our day! I'll tell you all about it next week, but we had a great time and I think this is going to be a fun adventure.

What I Learned in November

 ACK!!!! It is almost December, people!!! When I look back at the picture I took on November 1 {see below}, it seems more like a year ago, not a month ago. So much has happened since I last shared what I learned, and I have much more that I crammed into my little noggin this month! I present to you...what I learned in November!

1. I appreciate a warm fall.
The Midwest was not entirely void of cold/rainy days this fall, but I have to say, we were quite {pleasantly} overrun with above average warm fall days, and I loved them. Took this picture on November 1st, where I declared we had the best of all the worlds. Stunning fall color on trees, sunshine, blue skies, and sleeveless dresses. Oh yes, please.

2. I am grateful I could vote.
I'm not an overly political person. I don't talk politics in real life or on the blog. And I know this year has been extra rough for everyone on this scene. And my little votes {for all offices} may not have even mattered in the grand scheme. But when I stood at the polls and voted, I felt a sense of thankfulness that I had the opportunity to stand there and cast a vote. Whether or not those I voted for were ultimately elected, I know there are people all over this world who wish they had the opportunity to do what I did, and that was not lost to me in that moment. So I was grateful.

3. I do not miss raking. At all.
This month, my Facebook feed was overrun with pictures of raking parties from years gone by. We only had one tree at our old house, but it was big and leafy. We would rake and bag, rake and burn, rake and mulch...ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the raking. This year? No raking. Thank. The. Lord. {Also - I took a walk one day that led me to a cul-de-sac in our neighborhood, and about half the neighborhood was out dragging HUGE piles of leaves into the street. It's such a pretty little section of the neighborhood, but I immediately texted Ryan and told him I found the one downfall of that street: they have all the mature trees and they were paying the price.}

 4. I need to learn how to curl my hair like a grownup.
I have been growing my hair out for a year. It is THE slowest process ever for me. As it's growing, though, I'm learning I have exactly two hairstyles: straight and crunchy curly. So basically, if you see me with crunchy hair, you know I was either lazy or in a hurry and didn't want to take time to straighten it. But you know what I cannot do? Soft curls. I don't own the right curling iron and my hair is SO THICK, I'm not sure it would work if I tried it. But I think it's time I learned to do my hair like a grownup.

5. Setting up a website is not for the faint of heart. Or the technologically challenged. I am both.
I decided earlier this year that it would be a good idea to create a website that is more of a business site, so I can use it as a resource page for writing and speaking. But my creativity does not bend this way, so the days I spent bent over my laptop trying to create this thing were very nearly my undoing. I needed naps and lattes and extra grace. And possibly an additional brain. Kudos to you who revel in website creation. You are my heroes. {For the record, this is still in process and still taxing my brain.}

6. Diesel nozzles don't fit in non-diesel cars.
Did you know this? I did not, until the day I accidentally grabbed the diesel nozzle at the pump. GOD BLESS THE PERSON(S) who came up with this idea and saved the Shaffer team from maddening car repairs this month!

7. Brussels sprouts grow on stalks.

Did you know this? I always thought they grew in the little netting bag I buy them in at the grocery store. {HA!} Ryan and I were walking through Sam's Club one day and there was this big old stalk of Brussels sprouts, and I just stopped right there on the spot and said SHUT UP. I had no idea they grew on a stalk!

8. A year can make a big difference.
Today is my one year "fixaversary." It was a year ago today that Ryan and I began the journey to clean eating, working out, and trying to be healthier in general. I remember that day so well, how daunting it felt, how frustrating it was to survive from morning to night without 18 cookies, and how much I HURT from the workouts. It's still a struggle. I still want the cookies, and some of the workouts still make me hurt. But I've learned MANY good habits in the last year, and when I look at the difference from last year to this year, I'm really encouraged. It will be a forever focus for me. This will probably never come naturally. But it can be done! The pictures above are from last year's Thanksgiving and this November. The one from last year was the picture that was my final straw. I hated it so much, I decided to make a change. I'm not done changing, but I've sure come a long way.

The Saturday Six

One.
I have ridiculously thick and attitudinal hair. {And when I say it's thick, I'm not kidding. I once had my hair cut and though I had warned the stylist it was thick, I think she commented about a dozen times during the cut that it was the thickest hair she'd ever worked on.} Curls fall right out of my hair, and I never know what to do with it. Though I do not {yet} own this curling wand, I appreciated this curly hair tutorial!

Two.

Thought this was an appropriate token to get for the {super sweet} lady who helped with our house financing. We wanted to say thanks, because her hard and prompt work made everything come together as quickly as it did. We love s'mores by the fire pit. That's home to us. So we thought we'd offer that to her! And the sign just seemed to fit. {Found it at TJ Maxx.}

Three.
I do love a God-sized dream, and sometimes it gets discouraging when the dreams are delayed or denied {or even detoured}. Loved this article by Lanette Haskins.

Four.
I love that God writes our stories, and I'm drinking {gulping, is more like it} the story He's writing for us in this very moment. The story of transitions and homes and ministry. But I don't think anyone ever says things quite as well as Ann Voskamp, and while our details are different, I say THIS THIS THIS to the idea of God writes.

Five.

I guess I wasn't the only one to have an out-of-the-ordinary Easter. Callie {a recent blog discovery for me} wrote about her Easter disaster {an actual disaster, not just a weird day like we had} and what God taught her about its imperfection.

Six.
Because of our move, I did not get to read a book this week. I started a novel but the moved-up move kept me from finishing it. So in place of a book suggestion, I have a shopping suggestion! My niece is getting married this year, and she purchased a return address stamp to use for all their wedding mail. I liked it so much, I started hunting around on Etsy for one for our new house. Clearly this is not our EXACT one, but this is the design of the one Ryan and I picked out and it arrived this week! Pretty excited about it. {And if you're ever looking for a good gift idea for newlyweds or people moving, this is a good one!}

The Shafferland Shuffle

* We were EXHAUSTED last Sunday after the long weekend of yard sale madness, so as soon as church was over, we donned our Colts-cheering-clothing and hit Mo for the afternoon. Napping and game-watching. AND Ryan decided he needed no-bake cookies, so we made some and he proceeded to eat them straight from the pan before they even set up. LOL!! And for the first time in days, we were back in business with the coffee pot we rescued from the yard sale. Too bad we didn't rescue the filters before those sold!
* Monday evening, we donated all the leftover rummage and then went for a run while the geese went for a trip themselves. Ahhhhh fall. And can I just tell you that NOTHING stops your heart quite as much as coming home to fire trucks on your street? We were so tired from our run, but as soon as we saw the trucks, we broke into an even faster run to make sure our house was okay. It was {and yes, I'm the one who stopped to take a picture just in case it was us. Documentation overload. Also - it wasn't a fire at all. I'm guessing someone had a medical emergency.} The whole day just wore Braeya out. She conked out in our bed even before we did.
* Tuesday morning we had a rare treat when Ryan didn't have to go into work until late morning. We slept in, we had breakfast together...it was almost like a Saturday on a weekday! AND it was National Coffee Day, so we drank extra. {As if we need an excuse for that.} I spent most of the day working hard on my Bible study homework...I'd gotten behind, and there were many blanks to fill in and many lessons to learn!
* Wednesday was a writing day for me. It's so good to be back in my office, at my desk, working. {The house overhauls relegated me to the living room floor for several days.} Another sign of fall in Shafferland? The trusted combo of peanuts and candy corn, baby!!! We might have eaten too much of it while Ryan {and Braeya} took some online PTA classes.
* Thursday I went for about a five month overdue hair appointment. Always amazes me how much better I feel when I come away from the salon. Why do I wait so long to go??? It inspired me to work hard on our dinner, which included apple cider donuts! :) They were delish, by the way. And that night? More classes for Ryan and more blog reading for me. Pretty sure I had the way better end of the deal.
* Friday was our 34th monthiversary! Almost to three years, baby!! Ryan surprised me with a beautiful card that morning {YAY!!!!!} and then that night we went out for dinner and coffee. We ended up spending longer than usual at Starbucks, because earlier in the day, our internet went out at home. {Like it went out for a big part of the whole state...a cable had been cut somewhere.} I'd been home trying to write without the internet, which may SEEM an easy thing to do, but it's not. I research a LOT of things while I write. So we had to go catch up while we drank coffee. We're nothing if not celebratory!!! LOL!
 * Yesterday was a COLD AND YUCKY day here in the Midwest. We were so glad it wasn't last week and the yard sale! Ryan worked, and I went to take pictures at a corn maze and pumpkin patch. That adventure was cut short by rain, but we did enjoy a coffee break! Even found the place where Ryan and I added our hand print to the wall! We devoted the rest of our day to movies and naps. Because it was that kind of day outside!

The Shafferland Shuffle

* Last Sunday was a beautiful day at home with NO commitments after church. I took part of the afternoon and sorted through all the gifts we bought on Saturday and bagged them according to recipient to make our wrapping-palooza a little easier. Ryan and I did a LOT of online house hunting. {Don't worry. We have no news. We just like to house hunt!} And after dinner, he surprised me by making us ice cream sundaes. YUM!!!!!!

* Monday {after all the snow last week} - we got all KINDS of rain and had high rivers and flooding roads and the whole nine yards. And so. much. wind. Oh my word. It was crazy windy! Power outages everywhere. We were spared, but we did have some pretty vocal wind chimes! Lynne did a fun Christmas show during Mid-Morning, and I worked hard trying to get ahead for the holidays this week, so by the time I got home, I was ready to curl up and rest - and let Ms. Neighborhood Watch keep track of life for us!

* Tuesday evening after work, Lynne and I went out for dinner - BBQ!!! YUM!!! - and then we headed downtown to see all the trees at the Festival of Trees. We had a great time! So many beautiful trees, and the one from WBCL was so well done. Since I was gone, Ryan got to have dinner with his mom, which he doesn't often have the chance to do, so I'm glad he could do that!

* Wednesday I only worked half a day. My standing rule is that when I only have a half day of work because of a holiday, I get to have a frappe for my commute home. So I enjoyed that and then may or may not have taken a nap when I got home. A long nap. Ryan and I skipped cooking that night and had burgers in an impromptu date, and then we crashed on the couch to watch movies and have long talks. As for Sister Sue...she curled up with the ONE Christmas decoration I had out. She likes to get her hairy touch on everything.
* Thursday was Thanksgiving, and ours did not go quite as planned. We had hoped to get to my family's gathering and then Ryan's dad's side of the family as well, but at the last minute, part of my family couldn't make it because of bad weather. So our already small clan was even smaller, and everybody was sad. So we ended up staying at my family's gathering longer than planned to try to spread some Thanksgiving cheer, and we didn't make it to his dad's side. But the change in plans in no way changed the food - my goodness was there ever a lot of food!!! We're still stuffed.
* Friday, Ryan had to work all day, so while he was gone, I treated myself to something for the first time in five months - a cut and color. It was so heavenly!!! {I even took my laptop and scrapbooked while she worked. It was like the perfect day!} When Ryan got home, we started decorating our house for Christmas, and we got most of it done. I think that was the fastest I'd ever decorated - and none of it looks the same as last year!
* Ryan wasn't originally scheduled to work yesterday, but he went in to help out or a while, so while he was gone, I worked on some chores around the house. When he came home, we finished all the decorating and then got to spend the evening sitting and enjoying the work we did! So happy with the way the house looks. Peaceful and serene!

Shafferland Shuffle

* Last Sunday was CRAZY BUSY. We had signed up to take breakfast to our Sunday School class, so we stayed up late/got up early making that. It was also our first Sunday to be greeters, which was a lot of fun! Church was PACKED, which meant all the breakfast was eaten by the time we got to class, so we were glad we got to stay for the special lunch they had for volunteers! By the time we got home, we were so tired, we slept {like coma-level sleep} the entire afternoon. It was a gorgeous day, so we went for a walk that evening. So glad it wasn't the week before when Ryan was gone!
* Monday evening, Ryan and I went to the gym, and I did a new workout...which may or may not have nearly killed me, but I felt very good about it! It definitely exhausted me, because when we got home and had dinner, I put on my Colts jersey and hunkered down...and fell asleep...while Ryan and Braeya Jo Jo watched the game. I don't think Ryan has seen me sleep that hard ever - other than after the great dental event of 2014. Turns out the Colts got robbed {or so I hear} and I missed nothing by sleeping.

* Tuesday morning, when I arrived at work, I found a really nice, encouraging note on my desk, along with a box of Wheat Thins and a bag of Snickers. Really appreciated my co-workers being so understanding of my nervousness over hosting this week! That night after work, we went for a run, because the weather was STUNNING, and we have no idea how many more nights like that we'll have before it gets too cold to run outside. And then I came home and became an UTTER nerd: spreading out with my five {yes five} pages of notes for the next day's interview...to practice.

* Wednesday was, as you know, my first big interview! I chatted with Annie Downs about her book Let's All Be Brave - and it went well! I was thankful for the gift of Starbucks {and attached love notes} from Ryan, and for the prayers of many who kept  me calm in the moment. That night, Ryan and I went to church and had the chance to meet some new people. {Actually WE are the new people, but the folks we met were new to us.} And then the AGT finale: SO SO STINKIN' EXCITED that Mat Franco won!
*Thursday began with a haircut - got my bangs back! :) I co-hosted BLT with Jim, and we had a good time on the air, hearing stories of bravery. That night, Ryan worked hard at home, mowing yards at both houses, and working on our dishwasher, which is feeling ill right now. {Love having a handy man in the house!} I fear I wasn't nearly as productive, but does it count that I made no-bakes?

* Friday was the end of a long, long week for me. I'm realizing how much work it is to juggle Lynne's job AND mine! :) I was SO excited to get a text from Ryan in the afternoon, telling me he didn't have to work on Saturday after all. {This NEVER happens to us!!!} We were both exhausted when we got home, so we got Chinese takeout and cuddled up to watch a movie. Good little night.

* We actually got to sleep in on Saturday morning {hallelujah!!!} and enjoyed a breakfast of delicious homemade pumpkin pancakes. They were so good! We launched into hard work at home for the rest of the day. I wanted to get officially decorated for fall, so we went out for mums, and I potted them and decorated the house {inside and out} and Ryan worked on projects UNDER the house {YUCK!!!}. About 5 loads of laundry, a trip to the grocery store and a round of dishes later, we called it a day!

The Shafferland Shuffle

* Last Sunday, it was POURING when we woke up - and I think it was the hardest rain we'd ever walked to church in! I put my hair in a pony for the walk...to try to keep it from going all Monica Gellar on me. By the time church was over, it was such a nice day, and we had a wonderful time of rest at home. I ate the other half of the omelet-the-size-of-earth I got at breakfast the day before...and Braeya cleaned up what I couldn't.
* Monday night was HAIR OVERHAUL NIGHT FOR THIS GIRL. I'd not had it cut since November, and it was 37 kinds of straw-like and unhealthy. And I had about an inch of white all over my roots. So I spent 3 hours in the chair and came home with chopped off hair and - well - almost black hair. And I may or may not have completed the experience with a frappe. Ryan worked much harder than I did...mulching projects at the Greentown house!!!

* Tuesday night we went for a run and mine was a miserable failure. My injured knee, which had not hurt since Saturday DID NOT LIKE running. So I walked along and thoroughly enjoyed the gorgeous, full hanging baskets on the path. We went home and made quesadillas for dinner, and my friends Ronda and Katy joined us for dinner before watching the Beth Moore study with me. My heart was THRILLED with the messy kitchen - because it meant we were showing love in our house, and I loved that. :) And at the end of the day, I threw together a quick beach themed mantel. It's kind of sparse, but I still loved it.

* Wednesday, Lynne and I worked a sticker stop in Fort Wayne, as you already saw. We had pretty much all the weather Indiana has to offer - except snow - and had a great time mingling with listeners and cleaning off windows! And I was a good girl and didn't defect to the Hobby Lobby clearance aisle.

* Thursday, we had CUPCAKES at work! How happy did THAT make me!?!? Ryan and I had a relaxing evening at home; I worked on my Beth Moore homework, which includes writing out the entire book of 1 Thessalonians...and I did my nails! Fancy pants new shade of pink that I got for my birthday! It is also possible that I was a major Miss Crankypants that night, but we will just thank Ryan for his grace and move on about THAT.

 * Friday was, as the picture said, a complete waste of makeup. Good GRIEF. I left home for work and forgot my medicine and had to come back, which made me late, and Ryan's truck wouldn't start, which messed up his plan for the day. Happy full moon!! We should have gone back to bed, but we went to work, and whilst I worked, I watched that house fire in Texas - of the house falling off the cliff into the lake. Some people watch bird nests - apparently I watch random house fires. That night, we didn't have a full date, but we did have our first frozen hot chocolate from Dairy Queen. It was AMAZING.
* Saturday was a LONG day, but a great one! I got up early and went to work with Ryan...did some scrapbooking while he worked. We scurried to Indianapolis after work and went on a fun date to Buffalo Wild Wings and through a park on a walk. Then we made our way to Ryan's cousin's graduation open house. Lots of good food and laughter and fun!
