I know some of you have been reading along in this
little corner of the blogging world for many years. You’ve gotten to know my
parents through the stories I’ve shared, and you’ve followed their journey as
much as you’ve followed mine.
This year has been a rough one
for Dad. The whole year has been quite an adventure for all of us as we’ve
walked alongside him and Mom, trying to figure out the best path forward,
trying to encourage them, trying to answer questions.
Yesterday I sat in his room, listening
as he talked to a friend. Dad motioned for his friend to lean closer, which he
did, and Dad said slowly and deliberately, “He…is…faithful.”
Dad’s voice is softer than it
was, and sometimes he has to think for a while before conveying a thought. (And
other times, he’s as quick-witted as ever!) But his conviction in God’s love
and faithfulness remains unchanged.
Last night I came home and read
one of my favorite Psalms: 46. God is our refuge and strength, a very present
help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though
the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea.
Next to it, I’d written this
quote from a Darlene Schacht Bible study: “Life isn’t easy, but God is faithful.
When everything feels uncertain, when doubt or fear creeps in, we have a pillar
of strength to lean on. His faithfulness isn’t dependent on us having it all
together. It isn’t diminished by life’s imperfections. He is faithful because
that’s who He is.”
I’m thankful for both truths. I’m
thankful God is my refuge and strength right now in this uncertain season. I am
thankful God is always faithful, regardless of the circumstances around me.
He is faithful. It’s who He is.
And Dad still speaks it!
