The Grocery Overhaul

Have I mentioned that I do not easily grow accustomed to change? And yet I so often change things. Why?

When I first graduated from college and struck out on my own, my grocery budget was $50 a month. And that included shampoo and cleaning supplies. I shopped once a month and that was that.

The budget has grown (some) but the once-a-month shopping hasn't changed. It's a time thing. Especially when one of my stops, Wal-Mart, requires a minimum 30 minute allowance for standing in line at checkout.

But lately, Miss RACHEL in my office (yes, that's YOU, Rachel) has been...pushing me??...about leaning more in the direction of health in my eating habits. She wants to see me eat things like fruit and vegetables. Sigh. I can't shop only once a month and eat according to her plan.

So I'm trying it. I'm making an attempt in the month of July to shop once a week. This requires planning ahead on the whole menu thing. This requires perusing store ads. This requires thinking. I just finished constructing a makeshift menu for week one. It took over an hour. Hopefully I'll ease into this thing and it won't take an hour every week. Could be fun, I guess.

I do have the cutest little list, broken down by things on sale at certain stores, "must have" groceries, and "optional" things - which this time ranges from a frozen pizza and brownie mix to carrots and cucumbers. Rachel would find the pizza and brownie mix optional. I find the carrots and cucumbers optional.

So that's what's happening in the land of Bekah's groceries. I'm sure you were wondering.

Behah,
Speaking of shopping, I was in the Walmart line myself last night when I heard two guys talking behind me. One of them asked the other what time it was and the other said 8:30. The first guy said that he really wanted a Coke but if he drank one this late, he would be up all night. Both guys looked to be in their mid 20's. It made me think of your earlier post.

I go to the grocery store often, mostly for more bananas & avocados, which I only buy for a few days at a time. Half an avocado on my sandwich every day at lunchtime is a necessity.

I'm thinking of doing a post soon giving instructions on the best way to get perfect slices from an avocado, but I need my daughter here to take the pictures.

If you chat with people when you go to the grocery store, it might even become an enjoyable outing...

I'm in the process of overhauling my shopping habits, also. Albertson's has great weekly sales, which I miss out on if I spent my entire budget at the beginning of the month. (I'm a fan of the once-a-month shopping also, but I always have to buy milk & fruit/veggies weekly.) So in the spirit of saving, I'll be joining you in your efforts.

Joey - Those guys probably needed a big dose of caffeine if they were just getting in a Wal Mart line at 8:30. :) I'm glad to know they're in my boat too.

Skyepuppy - I've never just eaten an avocado, but I am very interested in learning to make good guacamole. I guess I never thought about eating it just by itself. (I don't think outside the box well.)

Amy - I'm looking forward to the weekly sales. I'm also wondering how much less food will go to waste because I'll actually be buying ONLY what I need. I tend to end up with a lot of impulse buys which just expire....

Bekah,

I don't eat an avocado by itself, either. I put the slices on a sandwich. On rare occasions, my daughter and I have eaten a sliced avocado with ranch (my daughter) or bleu cheese (me) dressing. That's as close to "by itself" as I get.

Guacamole:

Soft avocados (not sunken-in like it's decomposing). Discard seed (somebody at work actually left them in the guacamole he brought to work for a potluck) and scoop out contents. Add lime juice, about a capful if you have a twist-top or about 1/2 tsp (more?) if you don't PER AVOCADO (gives it zing and prevents blackening). Mash with a fork.

Shake in some garlic powder (6 shakes?). You should be able to see it on the top.

Dump in some forkfuls of your favorite medium-heat chunky salsa (don't use a spoon--too watery). Stir. Serve with tortilla chips.

Skyepuppy - I thought of you today as I shoppped and pushed the old cart past the avocados. I am definitely going to try the guacamole. Maybe that can be on NEXT week's shopping list! :)
