Orange Julius

Last week I told you I'd take pictures of the Orange Julius soon. I decided even if I'm here by myself, I'm deserving of good little smoothie-esque drink, so I made a batch just for me!

This recipe is my Mom's, although she says she hasn't made it since my sister's bridal shower over 25 years ago. Oops! She gave it to me when I planned to have some friends over for "breakfast for dinner" a few years ago, because she thought it would be a good little addition to the meal, and she was right!

I can't drink straight orange juice because the citric acid is too high, so this is one way I can enjoy some OJ! This tastes like one of those orange push up ice cream things I used to eat when I was a kid. VERY yummy. And if you use lower fat milk - it's not all that bad for you either!

The Recipe

6 ounces orange juice concentrate
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup milk
1 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
12 ice cubes

In blender, combine everything except the ice cubes. Mix on high until blended, then add ice cubes one at a time until smooth.

I usually use 1% milk. Skim does work fine. I also buy a 12 ounce can of concentrate, use half, and keep the other half for the next time. I also don't have ice cube trays, so I just use whatever amount of ice I want. It probably equals out to 2 1/2-3 cups of bagged ice.
I put in the concentrate first and dump everything else in on top of it. Don't forget the sugar! I did that once and WOW. Important ingredient.

After you blend that, it will be a little bit frothy on top.

Then add the ice a little at a time until it's the thickness you like. (I only made half a recipe for me - the full recipe above will go clear to the top of a blender.)

Pour in your glass, top with whipped cream (hello!!) and enjoy!!
