It's the Little Things

Monday marked two years since we went on a random house hunting date that led us in the front door of Shafferland 2.0. For those of you who might be new to the blog in that time, let me catch you up!

Ryan and I both used to commute every day. He drove 45 minutes each way and I drove an hour each way. It was an exhausting start to marriage, let me tell you! Eventually, I left my job and began working from home which eliminated my drive, but he still had long commutes five (and often six) days a week. So, just for fun, we started house hunting online. We looked at properties closer to his work, and the day we came through this house, we did so fully convinced it was just for fun. We never imagined we would actually end up with this house, but we did! (In less than two months!)

One of my favorite things about living in the same town where Ryan works is that we get to see each other for lunch almost every day. Ryan usually comes home for lunch, so I'll prepare something and we get to have at least a few minutes together in the middle of the day. We both love it. It may sound silly to some, but for us, this has been a huge, huge gift.

Yesterday, a few minutes before lunch, Ryan texted me to ask if I had cooked lunch. (I thought he suddenly had a fear I wasn't planning to feed him that day!) I told him my level of "cooking" that day meant "warming up leftovers," but lunch was definitely planned.

He wrote back and said, "I thought maybe we might go out."

Out? For lunch?

OKAY!!!

It was a quick lunch date, just at Wendy's, but I loved it
Obviously, it's not that we never get to have lunch together. It happens almost every day. And we go out to eat fairly regularly, too. So it wasn't about the trip to a restaurant. It was about doing something different! It was about getting a text suggesting something fun and different. It was about a date in the middle of the day. It was about eating out when we didn't have to.

For me, it's all about the little things. I appreciate them!

Thanks, Ryan, for the fun lunch date! :)

When my husband asks me, "Were you going to cook something for dinner or should we go out?" that's code for he wants to go out to eat. Even if I had something in mind, I'll just plan that for the next day. I'm not turning down going out to eat :). It is the small things... and when the small thing means no cooking, so much the better!!

What a fun surprise! I've said it before, but I love how intentional you both are about your relationship. In this season of our lives, we've tried really hard to say "Yes" to adventures - big and little - that present themselves to us. Sometimes that means an ice cream run with friends at 8pm on a Thursday night and other times it means a weekend getaway to Nashville!

I'm so happy with you about all the blessings (big and small) that this house has brought to you.
