If you aren't addicted to the Gaithers, this will mean nothing to you. But if you are...did you SEE THE PRESS RELEASE????????????
I was jumping all over the office (at home, not the work one. I'm much more controlled there) screaming and scaring the cats and emailing my sister and calling my Mom and screaming some more.
DAVID PHELPS!!! Back in the Vocal Band! It's a Christmas miracle 300 some days early.
I have no words that don't begin with EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!! So I'll just shut right up.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! (sorry...that slipped before I could hit "publish post.")

David who?
Gaither...you mean the people that charge outrageous amounts for their videos and then make the groups who are in those videos pay for their own copies to sell?
I need my mad face icon here. So just imagine it.
Is it wrong that I didn't know D.P. wasn't still in the GVB?
I mean I knew he WAS, but I never knew he left.
Don't hate me because I'm ignorant!
Oh Christina!! I don't hate you. But I do feel sad for you!
Honestly I can't quite remember when he left - maybe 3 years ago? Maybe not quite that long. He left to spend more time on solo work. (which I own if you ever want to view...but you can't take it with you!)
Their new tenor (who will still be in the GVB according to the press release) is Wes Hampton and he is pretty amazing. I liked it that they didnt' try to "replace David." Wes came in with his own sound and style and I think he's GREAT. But of course, David is David and there will never be another.
Guy went on sabbatical a few months ago and in those weeks he was off the tour, Mark, David and Jason Crabb filled in for him. So Mark and David have kind of been back in the ring lately anyway.
With all due respect to all other members of the group, I think this new combo sounds amazing.
And did I mention...DAVID??????
I don't know who David is, but, if I remember correctly, Mark Lowry (commedian) sings with the group too? Has some stories about Bill Gaither's chin, I think...
I like Mark Lowry a lot.
The Gaithers are ok., but it's not my favorite style of music. That's just me.
I figure heaven's gonna have a massive choir made up of sections of gospel, country gospel, country, classical, choir/choir, pop, rock, etc. etc. So, I'll find a place somewhere in there to fit! :-D
I just looked at the link to the press release and yes, Mark Lowry is in the group.
Not too keen on Michael English being a part of any Christian group given what happened with him and Marabel (sp?) of First Call a few years ago.
Call me old fashioned, but people like he, Sandi Patty, and Amy Grant who fall from their pedestal's need to stand down from the public eye permanently. That's just imho.
Man, my comments are turning out to be longer than my post! LOL.
I actually didn't know anything about the Gaithers (other than the songs that were in the church hymnal) until someone gave me one of Mark Lowry's comedy tapes when I was in high school. I LOVED Mark for years after that and would listen to anything that he was in...which led me to the Vocal Band, because at that time, he was still in it. That, in turn, led me to the Homecoming tapings, which I loved because they taught me a true appreciation for the hymns I'd grown up on but had declared to be old fashioned and boring.
I'm pretty pumped that Mark will be back too because he's hysterical yet so insightful all at the same time. I really like him.
My mom shares your sentiment toward Michael. I have no feeling one way or the other. All of that stuff that happened with him went on before I even really knew who he was, so I heard about it more as an afterthought. I know he's been welcomed back very genuinely by people whose opinions I trust, so I am fine with him coming back.
Tsofah,
I'm not familiar with what Michael English did, but there's a big difference between Sandi Patty and Amy Grant.
Sandi Patty and her new husband went through an official, formal, very public repentance and restoration program with their church.
Amy Grant's public statement was, "God wants me to be happy." It sets my teeth on edge just thinking about it.
I'm willing to allow Sandi Patty back into the public fold. But not Amy Grant.
Sandi Patty - Yes, in fact, when my mom and I went to see (several years ago) the Utmost for His Highest concert, she was there, and openly admitted to her sin and that God had restored her. Then she sang one of the best versions of "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" I had ever heard.
I was in tears by the end of it. The Holy Spirit was there and you could sense the sincerity.
Amy Grant - yeah, no thanks!
Michael English - He also has been open about his sin and struggles. In fact, there was a concert I was listening to (Okay..I'll admit, I'm a Southern Gospel fanatic!) on XM 34 - Enlighten (which is a Southern Gospel music channel). During this concert, Mark Lowry, talked about Michael English and his long path back to God. Then English sang this song that he wrote or someone wrote for him. I just can't remember the title.
The one thing that Christians tend to do (and I'm guilty) is beat up their wounded. When they seek a right relationship we should lift them up.
Umm...sorry Bek..you know me and soapboxes. I'll get off now. :)
Chris - it's okay. but just don't forget - DAVID PHELPS! Back in the vocal band!!!!!
