As part of the great overhaul of Shafferland, Ryan and I are getting new carpet put down in the main living areas of our home. The current carpet is probably about 30 years old and definitely is a quality they probably don't make anymore. {The only worn spot on the whole thing is right below the stairway door, compliments of the day I confined Braeya downstairs while I worked upstairs and she got so mad she ripped a hole in the carpet.}And just ask Ryan - the staples they used back in the day of that installation are also well made. And plentiful.
Anyway. While ripping the carpet off the step that leads to the upstairs {held on firmly by about 100 staples and that is not an exaggeration}, the entire step ripped away from the wall, revealing a tiny space under the stair landing.
I wish I could tell you that as the step ripped away, we were greeted by a treasure box containing a secret stash of unclaimed wealth...but alas, it revealed mostly debris, and a few random treasures, including:
* a paper butterfly bearing my sister's name
* a paper doll dress
* three playing cards {apparently from a children's game}
* a puzzle piece
And this newspaper from January 7, 1949, when you could buy a 4 gallon
electric automatic hot water heater for $54.98 and a tune up at the
Chevy dealership for $9.00.
My writer's mind is aflutter with the stories behind even these small things, but my memory-maker's heart is also aflutter...
...because I think before we seal that step back up with a fresh roll of carpet, we need to bury a treasure box underneath it to be discovered some day however many years from now when we {or whoever lives here then} call the soon-to-be-new carpet quits and put down a fresh piece.
So tell me! What would you put in a treasure box time capsule?

A picture of you and Ryan, a letter about you guys to your future selves or to people who might live there someday, a stamp, maybe a movie ticket stub, how about a wrapper from a pack of gum or even a candy bar (I wonder how much they change over time?), a book that you really love, also a newspaper of some sort from now, and what about some pictures of how the house looks right now or even of how Marion looks right now??
First of all, I like Tia's suggestions. I was going to say a wedding picture of you and Ryan and of course a picture of Braeya! Perhaps you could also leave one or two of your wonderful Blogs or writings. And, how about adding a few coffee beans to the mix?!!
Thanks again for all the fun Blogs!
I first was going to say a couple of your favorite blogs...or the address link to the blog. But it was already out there as a suggestion. So how about a coin with the current year or a menu from your favorite restaurant.
- your favorite Bible verse & why it is meaningful to you
- a list of the prices of current items (like you would find in a baby book)
- the history of who has owned the home so far
- also I 2nd the newspaper idea & pictures of the house in it's current state
Bekah, great idea!! I definitely vote on pics of your wedding, a newspaper (maybe Indpls, Ft. Wayne and Wall Strret Journal), a few bucks and coins with 2013 on them. Pictures of the outside of your house and also down the street. Picture of downtown Marion. And yes, a list of the cost of bread, milk, gallon of gas, a midsize car, etc. What great fun for someone to stumble on later.
I KNEW you would come up with things I hadn't thought of!!! GREAT JOB, GUYS!! So excited to do this!!! Thanks for the ideas. (And if you show up after this post - not too late to weigh in!!
I think everyone already said the things I thought of. And I would put the newspaper you found back in as well!
