I have tremendous respect for her and the life she has lived since she broke her neck as a teenager. I'm sure I wouldn't have nearly the grace and dignity that she has. I heard one of the people who met her while she was on campus say that she is just a lovely person...and she certainly does seem to be.
When I was in 5th grade, we had to do "living" book reports. We had to become a character from the book and give the report from that character's perspective. I read Joni's autobiography for my report, so for the official report, I sat in a wheelchair and wore a little contraption on my arm. (In her book, she talked about how she feeds herself with a spoon hooked into an arm brace.)
So I dug up this picture from waaaaaaaaaaay back in the fifth grade.

Now THAT is an outfit to proud of!
5th grade is such an incredibly awkward time for girls. I know, from personal experience. But your hair beats mine at that age, hands down.
I heard that Joni was coming your way. I remember reading one of her books when I was much younger and being so amazed at her grace despite everything she had endured. I am also amazed at her ability to paint...particularly since I can't hold a candle to her artistry and I have the use of both my hands.
Yeah I think at that time in my life I was coordinating solely on color - and I did a great job. THEN i learned about pattern coordination.
The hair was not too bad - I hadn't gotten the poofy bangs yet. it was LONG though. down past my waist.
Joni is pretty amazing - and so humble! I love that about her too.
That's a really cool story! She sounds like an inspiring woman. BTW, you look ab-fab (absolutely fabulous) love the socks.
What a cutie! I loved the idea for the report, btw.
Sarah - Thanks!! They did at least do the trick of keeping my legs warm during the skirt years. LOL.
Tsofah - I'm sure I hated oral book reports, but this was at least better than the traditional "I read this book and learned..." thing. I do remember there was this one guy in my class who didn't QUITE comprehend my reason for being in a wheelchair for my report because he did his report from a wheelchair too and there was nothing in his book remotely down that alley.
